Project Overview
NKB provided full A/E services to design and prepare construction documents for building envelope repairs to the historic U.S. Customs House. Essential scope items included the repair, replacement, repointing, and ongoing maintenance of exterior stone masonry, repair of the front entry porch, window/exterior door replacement, and replacement of existing free-standing canopies.
To fully investigate the existing conditions of the Customs House (the oldest federally occupied building in the GSA inventory), the NKB team conducted site visits, took photographs, captured unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone videos, borescope images, a hazardous materials survey and report, field measurements, and various conversations with key personnel involved in the facility. Our team also spoke with the GSA Historical representative regarding the historical elements of this assignment and the possible impact of the restoration. NKB then crafted a report detailing findings from our field work, analysis, and recommendations for each of the primary scope elements.
Masonry repairs included cleaning, repointing, repair and replacement of deteriorated stone, and patching holes in the foundation masonry discovered and documented by the NKB team. The public entrance required rehabilitation of all failing components including the stairs, canopy, roof, platform, columns, adjoining sidewalk, and foundation. Wood window frames and sills, showing signs of deterioration and leakage, were replaced with more efficient windows that are specifically intended for historic window replacement. Existing hollow metal doors and frames were replaced with aluminum and glass heavy duty construction doors.
